Let There Be (Good) Light!

Lighting is important for so many reasons- it contributes, and in some cases absolutely makes the ambiance of a space and can also serve as a great architectural detail. It’s a great way to personalize a new home or even a rental, making it one of our favorite pieces to specify. There are so many wonderful options out there at many different price points (have you seen Leanne Ford’s latest lighting collab with Target?!), and this simple addition can make a space truly feel like your own, adding personality to homes that don’t naturally have specific architectural features or heritage-style character.

We’ve rounded up some of our favorites to give you a little inspiration:

The reality is, aside from the beautiful shapes and personality that unique fixtures can add, even the most attractive of spaces can seem shady or sterile if the actual lighting is off. And the most unfortunate scenario is when you’ve put a lot of effort into building a beautiful home and the lighting does it a disservice.

There is a lot we can dig into with lighting (like lumens, and watts etc), but we thought we’d start here with a few key points to remember:

  • Ideally, each space should have at least 2, if not three sources of lighting. Overhead lighting is simply not enough, to keep a space feeling cozy and to work well throughout the day.

  • We recommend at minimum an overhead light of some sort, a floor lamp and a table lamp or sconce (or both!)

  • With our previous suggestion this may seem obvious, but you’ll want to make sure you have lighting at different heights. The problem with having too much overhead lighting is that while it may be good for finding something that’s fallen on the ground, it doesn’t do much to create a mood or an inviting space for you and your guests to spend time.

Do you guys have questions about lighting? It’s one of our favorite items to purchase, and we think a little can go SUCH a long way! Let us know in the comments below which you’re liking best and how you add ambiance to your space with lighting!
