10 Tips for Extroverts Practicing "Social-Distancing"

While even thinking about “social distancing” just a few weeks ago would have made us literally quake in our ankle boots, we understand the importance of doing our part for our community, our country and frankly, the world right now.

As extroverts, the idea of being cooped up at home can feel daunting - what will I do with my time? How will I connect with my friends/clients/family? How will I make the time pass while “socially distancing”? We can’t guarantee that all of these steps will work, but we are hoping that we can give you some good ideas to pass the time you would have normally spent connecting in person and heading out and around town.

But before we get into the nitty-gritty of it, we wanted to add a quick housekeeping note:

We acknowledge the absolute dire need to socially distance ourselves so that we can flatten the curve of COVID-19. We take the threat of this illness seriously and we wanted to make sure you knew that. However, here at Scout Modern, we also know that you are getting your news from a variety of informed sources and we have decided to commit to adding some light, creativity, color, and style into your life during these unprecedented, serious and concerning times. Please know that our commitment to those things and the direction of our upcoming content does not water down our understanding of the serious situation we are facing. We hope that you find our upbeat content useful and needed during this time.

Okay, we’re sure that this list will update and change as time goes on, but here are our first tips for socially distancing yourself when you’re an extrovert:

  1. Pick up the phone. This may seem simple but sometimes it’s hard to remember. We’re not necessarily suggesting only a simple phone call, but facetime-ing, skyping or using google hangouts can be a great option to get that face to face time, while respecting your social distancing!

  2. Play some board games. Sometimes when you’re at home the natural instinct is to put on Netflix/Hulu and let it play for hours and hours. If you live with others, try playing cards or board games. You might be surprised how much fun you have, and how connected you feel to the people you share a home with.

  3. Go LIVE on Instagram. Seriously, go live! Most of us are at home, on our phones and would love to see a friendly face on IG. It could be about anything - what you’re making for dinner, what you’re working on, a new hobby you’re trying during social distancing. Honestly, even a “get ready with me” can be so fun!

  4. Subscribe to a new podcast. Sometimes life can feel lonely when it’s quiet. A great podcast with people you enjoy listening too can fill up the space and feel more interactive than music or TV episodes.

  5. Talk to a neighbor. If you live in an apartment complex and can speak to someone through your window, or at your front door to their front door, try it! Just because you’re all stuck at home doesn’t mean you can’t yell out of your window at a neighbor ;)

  6. Do that thing you’ve been putting off. Doing yoga, scrapbooking, writing, reading, starting a blog, completing a DIY, trying a new recipe — you get it! But seriously, there is no time like the present and we all need some distraction right now. Since we have the extra time - make it happen!

Those are our top tips for now. As we add more things to our personal lists - we’ll share! Sending you all good vibes as we weather this storm.
