Sometimes you come across someone’s work who is multi-faceted as a person and an artist and it feels truly magnetic. That person is Anna Church. With a graphic design and interior styling background, Anna brings a fresh take to her highly sought after limited edition prints. We are so excited to share a little more about her, her process, and her work. We know you’re going to love it! Enjoy!

Hi Anna, tell us a little bit about yourself and your background.
An Artist creating fine art prints of Limited Edition. My experience is rooted in a graphic design and interior styling background I have been a full time practicing artist for 10years. With a tactile design sensibility, I love turning any potential material into a sculpture before capturing it through the lens of my camera. I have defined this multi-formatted medium as ‘Sculptography’. I have sold and exhibited Globally (exhibiting in; New York, Miami, London, Amsterdam, Toronto, and my native land of New Zealand).

Describe your style as an artist. What medium do you use?
I combine two techniques: Sculpture + Photography. I assemble compositions of found objects and turn them into a sculptural form, which I then capture through the lens of the camera. Yielding Fine art prints, sold as Limited Edition print runs. My sculptures are always an emerging process, a composition is often discovered by accident and I usually let this dictate the direction of my work.

Where do you find inspiration?
I LOVE HISTORY and I find a lot of inspiration from studying historical sculptors, still life and surrealist painters like; Helen Lundeberg, Gerald L. Brockhurst, Louise Nevelson, Lissitsky, Kay Sage, Morandi, Constantin Brâncuși. I'm also inspired by many artists, sculptors and ceramicists of today too (you may have discovered, I'm very proactive in the promotion of female artists especially, and dedicate a #MondayMuse post every month to promote amazing women artists and creators, both historical and current). I also find inspiration in another passion near and dear to my heart - interior design and architecture. I love salivating over beautiful design. This can often be a launching pad for the direction of my ideas and concepts. I love the cooperation of design and art and I'm so lucky to be able to work with so many talented interior designers to help them bring their final visions to fruition through the placement of my art. I love being able to cross-pollinate my love(s) across both platforms.

What does your workspace look like? Do you work from home or in a studio?
I'm very fortunate to have my studio at home. We have a beautiful Victorian Villa, which we have just renovated. My studio has a 10-foot ceiling and a beautiful bay window. It faces to the West, so all the beautiful afternoon sun streams in and provides me with the most glorious light. My studio is my happy place! I like being organized and tidy when I embark upon the creation of a new artwork or collection ... I don't mind being creatively messy when I'm in the thick of it, I just can't start that way! I always cleanse my workspace before and after, it's like a wee ritual.

Who are some of your favorite artists? Musicians? People that inspire you?
Oooo, this is a lovely opportunity to name some of the contemporary creators that inspire me! I'm inspired by the many artist friendships of creators I've made here in my adopted city, Toronto. I'm in awe of international designers, makers, and creators who have carved a career from their talents, like; Kelly Werstler, Anthena Calderone, Dello Studio, Hay Design, Patricia Treib, Mary Sibande, Grace Bader, Ines Longevial, Den Holm, Putnam & Putnam, Rachel Saunders, Cassi Namoda, Andy Dixon .... just to name a few! Music vibe wise, currently on repeat in my studio - Khruangbin, Tame Impala, Men I trust, Hird, Yukimi Nagano, Leisure, Jordan Rakie (funk never goes amiss either)... and all related playlists with a similar vibe. I love my 'Discover Weekly' playlist on Spotify.

Where can we see and/ or purchase your art?
I'm a self-represented artist, selling work directly from my website annachurchart.com to collectors from all over the globe. I work directly with Interior Designers and Art consultants (Both locally and internationally). My Gallery representatives are Sugar Lift (New York), Saatchi Online (LA), Alison Milne Gallery (Toronto), Poi Room, Flagstaff Gallery (New Zealand). I'm currently working on a couple of collaborative artworks with a close friend / Toronto artist.

What are the next steps in your career?
To keep on creating and expanding my lovely collector community. I have a multitude of ideas I want to tap into and experiment with. At the beginning of this year, I hired an intern, updated my website annachurchart.com, both have been deal-breakers and have freed me up to think about new upcoming artworks and work on the operations of my business too.

As hard as it has been to navigate through this pandemic and suddenly become a homeschool teacher to our 2 kiddos, Thomas (8) and Molly (10). I'm thankful that I'm able to be flexible in my work and dip in and out of work-life and family life, both of which are equally as important. I wouldn't be the best version of my 'Mother Self' without my creativity and entrepreneurship and I couldn't bring the best of myself to those roles if I didn't have the fulfillment I have from being a mother.
