All About Flowers (and the Flower Market!)

It’s no surprise to you that we love flowers here at Scout Modern. We think it adds so much to a home when you bring in some plant-style life. It adds softness, beauty, personality and interest to a space — if you’re feel like your place feels a bit drab, our number one tip is ALWAYS to try some florals! In addition to this being a great interior tip, and frankly just good for the soul, it also happens to be one of our favorite weekend activities.

If you haven’t even been to a flower market, we would highly recommend it. It’s a great way to find new flower varieties that you may have never heard of or seen before, and it also gives you some practice at making your own arrangements. Your new favorite flower (or arrangement) could be just around the corner!

Not sure where to start when looking at flowers? Our best tip is to just let your heart and eyes guide you to something you love, but if you are curious about what we often ask for, here are some of our favorites:

  • Protea (Limestone Sugarbush or Pincushion variety)

  • Peonies

  • Banksia

  • Scabiosa

  • Poppies

  • Anemones

  • Ranunculus

  • Spirea

  • Lilacs

  • Chamomile

  • Palm leaves (we love something with height and texture to add into our arrangements)

  • Dried Palm leaves

  • Angelica

  • Wax Flower

  • Dried Pampas

  • White lisianthus

We sometimes get questions about flowers in our inbox, so we thought we’d share our most frequently asked flower related question in case you have it too:

What should I keep in mind when making my own arrangement?

When making a beautiful and natural-looking arrangement (our favorite kind), you will want to make sure the flowers you are selecting offer a variety of heights, scales, and textures. Something soft with large or fluffy petals perhaps paired something architectural — like a large palm leaf or interesting filling piece. Mixing big and small flowers will help your arrangement look fresh from the garden, while also providing lots of visual interest. Remember too that you can cut your stems to add and edit the heights and create a wider variety - but you just want to make sure that it will fit with the vessel you will put it into before you make your cuts. We also like to refresh the water every day, and trim a little bit off the ends every few days, this will help your flowers last a bit longer, and keep them looking fresh.

In case you haven’t been the LA Flower Market before, you can find the original one at:

754 Wall St. (between 7th and 8th)
Los Angeles, CA 90014

They are open Monday - Saturday to both the trade and the public (public hours begin at 8am) and there is a small entrance fee of $2 on Monday - Friday and $1 on Saturday. You can find more information about the market, here.

If you’re not so much of a flower market person (but we think you should give it a go at least once!) here are some of our favorite LA florists:

Flowerboy Project
Wildflora
Gilly’s Flowers

Enjoy!
