Gender Neutral Kids Room

December 1, 2016 Scout Modern

When this client reached out to us for help with their children's shared bedroom in the Hollywood Hills, we jumped at the opportunity! The family was looking to transition their youngest child from her crib into a "big kid" bed and came to us for a Full Design overhaul. They gave us a great idea of exactly what they wanted for the space: clean and modern with mid-century flair, kid-friendly and gender neutral. She also let us know she had commissioned a custom piece of art from the talented Matt Shapira of Roaming Elephant. His work was all the inspo we needed to come up with a design plan for some of LA's coolest kiddos. Take a look at what we did to totally transform this shared kids space into a room both big brother and little sis can enjoy!

To start, we recommended painting the walls white to brighten the entire space (you may notice paint sampling around the door frame in the before photo). Next we removed the loft bed that was being used by their little boy, as well as the crib. The loft bed was actually very nice but its size, orientation in the space, and the dark espresso color made the room feel heavy. We wanted a bed with a sleek look in either a birch wood or white finish, to keep things feeling fresh and modern. We chose the Perch Bunk Bed by Oeuf. Additional perks to this bed are the optional storage add-ons (we went with both the book shelf and the console add-on, designating a space for their books and games) and its ability to be configured as two individual twin beds. If the family ever move or just want to switch things up, they have options.

Next on our list was the curtain situation. The bedroom has some pretty spectacular views just outside the sliding glass doors. With that though, comes a lot of light. The room had a double rod in place with two layers and several panels of blackout curtains that were very heavy and nearly impossible to slide due to the weight. We wanted to keep the option of pulling the curtains from one end rather than flanking both sides like a window. To achieve this, we installed a traverse rod (which allows a one-way pull bypassing a center bracket) and invested in a nice set of blackout curtains to buy mom and dad an extra hour of sleep if they need it.

We styled the room with fun accessories like the multi-head floor lamp, a colorful rug and a brightly colored mid-century style chair (these are our flair pieces). The cool vintage globe adds a pop of color and educational fun. We kept the bedding neutral, added a few fun pillows, dressed the shelves with books and snow globes (from trips to NYC) and brought in a paper storage bag for ya know, swords and stuff. We finished off the look with the rocking horse, handmade by the kid's grandad (swoon) and a few fabulous pieces of art by some very local artists.
